Season 3 Episode 18

One quick correction from last week, the Monks bottled 108 cases of wine not 110 bottles.

Season 3 Episode 18 – DOC (Date of Conception)

As usual a Sun/Jin episode is a bit boring.

The flashback takes place soon after Sun and Jin’s wedding. Sun runs into, what turns out to be Jin’s mother, and is blackmailed for $100,000. While Jin is trying to cover his story that his dad is dead we learn that he was in the army.
Sun: “You said your father died when you were 16.”
Sun then tracks down Jin’s dad who lets Sun know he’s not even 100% sure he’s really Jin’s father.

Sun then goes and gets 100 G’s from daddy (who keeps that kinda cash in his office apparently). The purpose of all this is that Sun’s dad tells Sun that Jin will now be working for him. In other words, its Sun’s fault Jin had to beat people up for Mr. Paik.

Sun gives Jin’s mother the cash and then puts her in her place by saying that Jin thinks she’s dead and she can make it happen.

Back on the Island Juliet takes Sun to a secret room in the medical hatch for an ultrasound. Juliet tells Sun she’s lost 9 patients in 3 years. She tells Sun she conceived her baby on the Island; even though Jin was suppose to be infertile.
Juliet: “The average sperm count is 60 to 80 million. On this Island it’s five times that.”
I’m some happy I don’t live on that island.

In the end Juliet goes back to the hatch and leaves Ben a message:
Juliet: “Ben its 6am Saturday morning. The fetus is healthy and conceived on the island with her husband. He was sterile when he got here. I’m still working on getting samples from the other woman. I should have Austen’s soon. I’ll report back when I know more. [stops tape] I hate you.”

Meanwhile, Desmond, Charlie, Jin and Hugo are trying to save Naomi (the new girl). Hugo fires off a flare:
Hugo: “Opps.”
Out of the jungle comes Mikhail alive and well. Guess that gate is for the monster not humans.

Mikhail saves Naomi and in Portuguese she says:
Naomi: “Eu nao estou so”
Mikhail claims she says thank you but lucky for you all I’m fluent in Portuguese. Her exact words to him are “I’m not alone.”

When he leaves Mikhail tries to take the phone but doesn’t make it. Once he’s gone Hugo tells Naomi they are the survivors of flight 815… she tells him that’s impossible:
Naomi: “Flight 815. They found the plane. There were no survivors. They were all dead.”
Is she an Other?
Is she just lying to the Losties?
Did the Others stage some elaborate crash site back in the real world?

Season 3 Episode 17

Before I start this week’s recap I want to back track and mention a few things from past episodes:

There is still argument about the Paulo/Nikki flashback episode Exposé. The argument being that even though in past episodes we see Charlie and Eko burn the plane, when Eko and Locke first enter the hatch (long after Paulo was down there) they have to move the plane to get in. So the question is how did Paulo get into the hatch without moving the plane? The answer is quite simple when you re-watch the episode. As Paulo is hiding the diamonds in the toilet Ben and Juliet enter the hatch and in the background you here the following conversation:
Ben: “Who left this open?”
Juliet: “Tom was down here a couple days ago.”
Ben: “Have him cover it up with the plane.”

Now the case should be closed.

Now last week episode:
I re-watched the episode and noted a few things.
One mistake I made was stating that Juliet arrived on the Island mid-September 2001. She tells Goodwin “Tomorrow I will have been on the Island 3 years.” She then proceeds to Ben’s place and calls him a liar. When Ben shows Juliet her sister on the screen he says “Yesterday you called me a liar.” Thus, Juliet arrived on the Island September 22nd, 2001, three years to the day before flight 815 crashed.

She also mentioned that the person who developed Ben’s X-Rays for her was Carl. Carl was Alex’s boyfriend that left the other Island with Kate and Sawyer.

And we know all the mothers died having children on the Island. Claire survived thanks to the Others. How did Danielle survive?

Moving on…

Season 3 Episode 17 Catch 22

Starting with the flashback. By reading the label on the wine bottles we learn that this flashback takes place in 1995 in Scotland. Did you notice the monks only made 110 bottles of wine. Then Desmond drank two, guess that leaves 108.

Desmond is becoming a monk which seems to be why he uses the word Brotha so much. The vineyard is named Moriah. Desmond explains that this was the mountain range where God commands Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac, as a test to see if he is loyal.
Brother Campbell: “Perhaps you underestimate the value of sacrifice.”
Similarly back on the island Desmond feels he needs to sacrifice Charlie to get to Penny:
Desmond: “It means it’s bloody pointless. I keep saving your life and what good has it done. It’s just going to keep happening again and again and again. Maybe that’s the point. Maybe it’s a test.
Charlie: “A test?”
Desmond: “Like God testing Abraham. Except I failed, because I change what I see.”

While bottling the wine Desmond gets a nice punch in the nose from Derek. We learn that Derek is the brother of Ruth. Ruth would be Desmond’s fiancée who he left one week before their wedding because he had a “calling”.

Desmond goes back to the Abbey and drinks some wine and Brother Campbell fires him. He tells him God has a bigger plan for him:
Desmond: “I’m sure he does”
Brother Campbell: “He does, you just spent too much time running away to realize what you may be running toward.”

Did you notice the picture on the desk when Desmond returned his monk suit? It’s Brother Campbell and the old lady Desmond got the ring from in his last flashback. The lady who explained to him that life has a way of course correcting. (In other words you can save Charlie 100 times but eventually he’ll die).

Desmond then goes with Brother Martin to deliver the wine where he meets Penny for the first time.
Back on the Island Desmond sees flashes that lead him to believe Penny is coming to the Island. He also believes Charlie will have to die for this to occur.

Hugo and Desmond get the first aid kit from Jack. They discuss taping injured ankles, which is a reference to when Desmond and Jack met in the real world when Jack twisted his ankle running in the stadium.

When they invite Jin to join them he becomes quite the happy camper. And be honest, you cracked up when he was telling his ghost story:
Jin: “Korean… Korean… Korean...BOO!!”

The four gents see a helicopter crash into the ocean and someone parachute out. Trekking through the woods the find some of the parachuter’s belongings. The first thing is a Portuguese version of Joseph Heller’s book Catch-22 (Ardil-22). Inside they find the picture of Desmond and Penny.
They also find a a hula girl and a phone:
Jin: “Walkie Talkie?”
Hugo: “No dude, that’s a satellite phone. Crap its dead.”
Charlie: “Shocker.”

When the time comes for Charlie to die Desmond saves his life, potentially changing his flashback. They find the parachuter and discover it’s not Penny. But this girl knows Desmond. This is a brand new character to the Lost cast. The actress is Marsha Thomason and she will play “Naomi” on the show.

Elsewhere on the Island the love triangle between Jack, Kate and Sawyer continues. Let’s start with the Sawyer quotes of the night:
“How about a little afternoon delight?”
“What you want me to make you a mixed tape?” {He snags Bernard’s Phil Colin’s tape for her. I guess Desmond could "feel it coming in the air tonight"}
“You two arguing over who’s your favorite Other?”
“It’s from the hatch. If we don’t play every 108 minutes the Island will exploded.”

Kate is chatting it up with Jack when he makes an interesting comment:
Kate: “Its strange being back, not looking for a way out of a cage, not looking for a reason to run off into the jungle again. Almost don’t know what to do with myself.”
Jack: “Well enjoy it. I’m sure something will go wrong soon enough.”
Is Jack hinting to us that he knows Juliet is up to something? Is he only staying close to her to prepare for her turning on them?

After seeing Jack and Juliet together Kate jumps Sawyer. Hope they had Dharma condoms cause we don’t need another pregnant lady on the Island. When Sawyer figures out why Kate did what she did… well… I couldn’t have said it better myself:
Sawyer: “You ain’t gotta use me freckles, you just gotta ask.”
I hope she doesn’t get with Jack, because you know what they say. “Once you go Jack…”

Next week:
Season 3 Episode 18 – D.O.C. Jin/Sun flashback - preview

Just an update on future episodes .Episode 20 is no longer being listed as a Dharma flashback but as a Ben flashback. Because of this the two hour season finale is now being listed as a Jack flashback.

See ya next week.

Season 3 Episode 16

Season 3 Episode 16 One of Us

So the episode starts with Juliet arriving at Herarat Aviation for the flight to the Island. Of course if you rearrange the letters in Herarat you get Earhart, as in Amelia Earhart, whose plane vanished in 1937 and has never been seen since.

As Juliet leaves her sister the song “Downtown” is playing in the car. Three years later we see Juliet playing the song on the Island.

For the “intense” ride to the Island Richard and Ethan knock Juliet out. This occurs mid-September 2001. She believes she is going for six months but that is not the case.

We learn that no one on the island has been able to give birth until Claire.

Goodwin makes an appearance and we learn he had a relationship with Juliet. Does Juliet know Ana Lucia killed Goodwin? Most likely, because Ben knew:
Season 2 Episode 20
ANA: Hey, Henry, what do you say? How long are you going to keep up this hunger strike, Henry? I ever tell you I was a cop? I've been around a lot of killers in my life. You know what surprises me most about them? How much they love to talk. But you're different, Henry. Hmm? Quiet.
BEN: [whispers something inaudible]
ANA: What was that?
BEN: [repeats the whisper twice.]
ANA [getting in Gale's face]: If you're going to say something; you're going to have to speak up.
[Gale suddenly stands and knocks Ana back. He grabs her and starts strangling her.]
BEN: You killed 2 of us -- good people who were leaving you alone. You're the killer, Ana-Lucia

To keep Juliet on the Island Ben promises to cure her sister’s cancer (he even said Jacob promised). To prove he wasn’t lying, after they witness the plane crash they go visit Mikhail. Mikhail has quite the TV set up and is watching what looks to be CNN. He tells Ben that it is Oceanic Flight 815 that has crashed with 324 passengers on board (324 backwards is 4 23). Ben tells Mikhail “I want detailed files on every single passenger”. Then via headset Ben talks to Richard (who along with Ethan seems to be allowed to travel to and from the Island). He proves to Juliet that her sister is alive and has a son, Julian. This of course contradicts the secrets on the Mittelos website, which led us to believe Rachel had a daughter. (see my blog for season 3 episode 7). After seeing her sister on the screen Juliet tells Ben she wants to go home but he wants her to stay and help:
Juliet: “It’s impossible. The mothers keep dying.”
Ben: “Then we’ll find more mothers. Who knows, maybe there’s one on that plane.”

Back in real time Juliet returns with the Losties to camp. I still can’t figure out why they aren’t all packing up and moving to the Other’s village. Claire is quite sick which we learn later is due to an implant the Others put in her.
Sawyer: “Well if it ain’t three men and a baby. I counted Hugo twice.”

To save Claire Juliet gets the medical supplies hid under the tree with the special marking. In case you didn’t notice, it’s the same marking the Others tattooed on Juliet’s back.

After she makes the big save we discover the usual Lost plot twist:
Ben: “Let’s go over it again.”
Juliet: “I know what to do.”
Ben: “Let’s go over it again just to be sure.”
Juliet: “I drag Austen out into the jungle, handcuff myself to her, then tell her I was gassed just like she was.”
Ben: “And if she catches you in the lie?”
Juliet: “I’ll admit to it. Tell her it was the only way to earn her trust.”
Ben: “Good, what then?”
Juliet: “They’ll take me back to the beach. I know you want me to go there, but after everything we’ve done to them it’s going to be a problem.”
Ben: “We’ve activated the implant in Claire. She should be symptomatic within 48 hours. By the time you get to the camp you’ll have a nice big crisis to solve.”
Juliet: “I’ll need supplies.”
Ben: “Price is already on his way. He’ll hide the case at Ethan’s old drop point. Tell Jack that you can save her. He trusts you.

So…
Why is she there? To take the baby? To take Sun?
Should Sun be getting those shots?
Will we have another twist where Juliet stays with the Losties?
Was it meant to be symbolic at the end when she was making her tent and was ‘tying up the loose ends’?
Is Jack really this dumb?

Season 3 Episode 15

Season 3 Episode 15 Left Behind

In the flashback Kate’s car breaks down and she gets towed. There she sees Cassidy trying to sell some necklaces. This is the same scam Sawyer taught her in his flashback in season 2 (“The Long Con”). She helps her with the scam so the cops don’t show up. With Cassidy’s help Kate meets up with her mom at the restaurant where she works:
Diane (Kate’s mom): “You can’t help who you love Katherine. And for good or bad I loved him. And you burnt him alive… Because you are my daughter I’m not going to tell the two men sitting at the table, who have been following me for the last month, that you are here. And I swear to God Katie, if I ever see you again. The first thing I will do is yell for help.”

I think I liked Kate’s mom better when she was Sabrina the Teenage Witch’s aunt Zelda. But she sticks to her word. Think back to Season 1 Episode 22 “Born to Run”
Kate gets help from her friend Tom to see her sick mother in the hospital:
[Diane opens her eyes.]
KATE: Mom? [Kate cries] It's me, Katie.
DIANE: Katherine?
KATE: It's me, Katherine. I'm so sorry for everything I have put you through.
DIANE [softly]: Help. Help.
KATE: It's okay, mom. It's me.
DIANE [more loudly]: Help. Help.
KATE: It's okay.

DIANE: Help. Help me. Somebody help me.

Cassidy tells Kate she’s pregnant with Sawyers baby. We already knew this from earlier in the season. She has a baby and names her Clementine.

So Locke has joined the Others. Since he never wants to leave the Island I guess this isn’t that far fetched. Guess that would make since for Rose and Bernard as well. Locke leaves Kate with this message:
Locke: “I want you to know I made a strong case for you. I told them that you were a good person; reliable, smart, honest. Then they told me who you were and what you had done. Let’s just say forgiveness isn’t one of their strong suits.”

The Others have also left O-town behind and moved somewhere else. I guess they aren’t happy about the Losties finding their camp. Hopefully the Losties will move there now.

During her trip through the jungle with Juliet Kate discovers a few things:
Juliet’s shoulder has been dislocated 4 times
According to Juliet the Others don’t know what the “monster” is but she knows it doesn’t like their fences
The Others have left Juliet (she did kill one of them, and asked Jack to kill Ben)

When Kate finally finds Jack he makes it pretty clear he’s all about Juliet. Guess it goes to show you can’t have your Jack and Sawyer too.

Sawyer is the temporary leader of the Losties.

So Sayid, Kate, Jack and Juliet are on their way back to camp. Sayid isn’t too happy about Juliet coming and I’m betting Sawyer won’t be too happy to see her.

Next week’s episode:
Season 3 Episode 16 “One of Us” Juliet flashback.
Last season the episode where Ben was captured was called “One of Them”.

Just a couple quick notes that I found interesting for the rest of the season. Episode 20 airing May 9th will be a special episode which is listed as a “Dharma flashback”. Looks like we’ll head back to the 70’s and see how this thing all came about. Also the season finale on May 23rd will be a 2 hour Ben flashback.

See you all next week. For those who still aren’t reading my blog someone should gas you. And if you don’t want that…“I don’t think Jack wanted it either. Sucks for you
dude”.
