Season 3 Episode 17
Before I start this week’s recap I want to back track and mention a few things from past episodes:
There is still argument about the Paulo/Nikki flashback episode Exposé. The argument being that even though in past episodes we see Charlie and Eko burn the plane, when Eko and Locke first enter the hatch (long after Paulo was down there) they have to move the plane to get in. So the question is how did Paulo get into the hatch without moving the plane? The answer is quite simple when you re-watch the episode. As Paulo is hiding the diamonds in the toilet Ben and Juliet enter the hatch and in the background you here the following conversation:
Ben: “Who left this open?”
Juliet: “Tom was down here a couple days ago.”
Ben: “Have him cover it up with the plane.”
Now the case should be closed.
Now last week episode:
I re-watched the episode and noted a few things.
One mistake I made was stating that Juliet arrived on the Island mid-September 2001. She tells Goodwin “Tomorrow I will have been on the Island 3 years.” She then proceeds to Ben’s place and calls him a liar. When Ben shows Juliet her sister on the screen he says “Yesterday you called me a liar.” Thus, Juliet arrived on the Island September 22nd, 2001, three years to the day before flight 815 crashed.
She also mentioned that the person who developed Ben’s X-Rays for her was Carl. Carl was Alex’s boyfriend that left the other Island with Kate and Sawyer.
And we know all the mothers died having children on the Island. Claire survived thanks to the Others. How did Danielle survive?

Moving on…
Season 3 Episode 17 Catch 22
Starting with the flashback. By reading the label on the wine bottles we learn that this flashback takes place in 1995 in Scotland. Did you notice the monks only made 110 bottles of wine. Then Desmond drank two, guess that leaves 108.
Desmond is becoming a monk which seems to be why he uses the word Brotha so much. The vineyard is named Moriah. Desmond explains that this was the mountain range where God commands Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac, as a test to see if he is loyal.
Brother Campbell: “Perhaps you underestimate the value of sacrifice.”
Similarly back on the island Desmond feels he needs to sacrifice Charlie to get to Penny:
Desmond: “It means it’s bloody pointless. I keep saving your life and what good has it done. It’s just going to keep happening again and again and again. Maybe that’s the point. Maybe it’s a test.
Charlie: “A test?”
Desmond: “Like God testing Abraham. Except I failed, because I change what I see.”
While bottling the wine Desmond gets a nice punch in the nose from Derek. We learn that Derek is the brother of Ruth. Ruth would be Desmond’s fiancée who he left one week before their wedding because he had a “calling”.
Desmond goes back to the Abbey and drinks some wine and Brother Campbell fires him. He tells him God has a bigger plan for him:
Desmond: “I’m sure he does”
Brother Campbell: “He does, you just spent too much time running away to realize what you may be running toward.”
Did you notice the picture on the desk when Desmond returned his monk suit? It’s Brother Campbell and the old lady Desmond got the ring from in his last flashback. The lady who explained to him that life has a way of course correcting. (In other words you can save Charlie 100 times but eventually he’ll die).
Desmond then goes with Brother Martin to deliver the wine where he meets Penny for the first time.
Back on the Island Desmond sees flashes that lead him to believe Penny is coming to the Island. He also believes Charlie will have to die for this to occur.
Hugo and Desmond get the first aid kit from Jack. They discuss taping injured ankles, which is a reference to when Desmond and Jack met in the real world when Jack twisted his ankle running in the stadium.
When they invite Jin to join them he becomes quite the happy camper. And be honest, you cracked up when he was telling his ghost story:
Jin: “Korean… Korean… Korean...BOO!!”
The four gents see a helicopter crash into the ocean and someone parachute out. Trekking through the woods the find some of the parachuter’s belongings. The first thing is a Portuguese version of Joseph Heller’s book Catch-22 (Ardil-22). Inside they find the picture of Desmond and Penny.
They also find a a hula girl and a phone:
Jin: “Walkie Talkie?”
Hugo: “No dude, that’s a satellite phone. Crap its dead.”
Charlie: “Shocker.”
When the time comes for Charlie to die Desmond saves his life, potentially changing his flashback. They find the parachuter and discover it’s not Penny. But this girl knows Desmond. This is a brand new character to the Lost cast. The actress is Marsha Thomason and she will play “Naomi” on the show.
Elsewhere on the Island the love triangle between Jack, Kate and Sawyer continues. Let’s start with the Sawyer quotes of the night:
“How about a little afternoon delight?”
“What you want me to make you a mixed tape?” {He snags Bernard’s Phil Colin’s tape for her. I guess Desmond could "feel it coming in the air tonight"}
“You two arguing over who’s your favorite Other?”
“It’s from the hatch. If we don’t play every 108 minutes the Island will exploded.”
Kate is chatting it up with Jack when he makes an interesting comment:
Kate: “Its strange being back, not looking for a way out of a cage, not looking for a reason to run off into the jungle again. Almost don’t know what to do with myself.”
Jack: “Well enjoy it. I’m sure something will go wrong soon enough.”
Is Jack hinting to us that he knows Juliet is up to something? Is he only staying close to her to prepare for her turning on them?
After seeing Jack and Juliet together Kate jumps Sawyer. Hope they had Dharma condoms cause we don’t need another pregnant lady on the Island. When Sawyer figures out why Kate did what she did… well… I couldn’t have said it better myself:
Sawyer: “You ain’t gotta use me freckles, you just gotta ask.”
I hope she doesn’t get with Jack, because you know what they say. “Once you go Jack…”
