Season 4 Episode 3

Let’s start with a little news here. This season of Lost was originally scheduled for 16 episodes. By the time the writers strike began the producers had completed the first 8. They are now attempting to complete at least 5 more episodes to end the season (meaning 3 episodes will be “Lost” or added onto next season.). This may cause a 3 to 4 week delay between episodes 8 and 9, but I’ll keep you posted as this transpires.

Now for those of you who don’t know, ABC has been replaying the previous week’s episodes at 9pm (Atlantic time) before each new episode every week. They’ve been calling these episodes “the missing pieces” as they add information and clues to the bottom of the screen throughout the episode. I’ve made some notes of things we may have missed from last week…

During the flashback where Daniel is watching the news about the discovery of 815:
“The woman is not his wife, but his caregiver”
So he really is a nutjob like Naomi said.

As the helicopter is starting to crash and Daniel is pushed out
“The island is proving to be a hard place to reach”

I also noticed the following conversation:
Charlotte: “I can’t find my vest”
Miles: “Check under your seat”
Charlotte: “I already did”
Miles: “Here just take mine”
If it wasn’t for that moment Charlotte would be dead

The episode points out the connection I made last week between Daniel’s last name and the physicist Michael Faraday.

When Ben and Locke realize Hurley has seen Jacob’s cabin:
“Ben claims one does not visit Jacob, instead Jacob ‘summons you’. So perhaps Hurley is special as well”

When Miles first appears in the flashback it compares his full name, Miles Straume, to the word Maelstrom.
Maelstrom:
-a situation marked by confusion, turbulence, strong feelings, violence, or destruction

The episode also pointed out the connection I made between Charlotte Staples Lewis and CS Lewis:
“Chronicles of Narnia – the story about an unlikely journey to a most unusual place”

During Naomi’s flashback scene:
“Naomi is getting her orders from Matthew Abaddon. Abaddon is a biblical reference meaning “guardian of the abyss”
When Miles radios the freighter:
“George Minkowski is the man who answered Jack’s first call for help. He shares his name with Hermann Minkowski a German mathematician who introduced the concept of ‘spacetime’”
To put it briefly the concept of spacetime discusses how time is the fourth dimension and not a constant as we perceive it to be. Makes a lot of sense toward tonight’s episode.

On my own I also researched this little tidbit. In Season 3 Episode 14 (Exposé) we can see the script from the TV show Nikki was in. Notice the same last name as our helicopter pilot Frank Lapidus there. Has to be some relationship … I mean this is Lost.

Now on with the show

Season 4 Episode 3
The Economist
Sayid Flash-forward.

On the island we see Jack and Miles discussing Ben. If you are re-watching this scene turn up the volume it’s hard to hear:
Jack: “What do you want with him?”
Miles: “I want to locate him. The people who hired me told me his name was Benjamin Linus, he gave me this picture and that’s all he told me. He said find him. And for what they’re paying me I don’t need to know anything else.

Sayid checks out Naomi’s bracelet which is engraved:
“N, I’ll always be with you R.C.”

He then makes a deal to get to the freighter if he brings Charlotte back safe.

Juliet heads back to the beach to get Desmond. It seems that Kate considers returning as well but realizes she can get some alone time with Jack (or at least without Juliet around).

Miles: “Hey Jarrah, do you think you are going after Charlotte without me?”
Sayid: “Of course not.”
Miles: “Oh… well good.”
Little does he know he’ll be traded for Charlotte.

Locke is still on the hunt for Jacob’s cabin but it seems to have vanished.
Ben: “John’s looking for someone to tell him what to do next.”

Hurley and Locke have a little spat so Locke makes some things clear:
Locke: “… and right now Hugo I’m making the decisions. Is that gonna be a problem for you?”

Kate is trying to flirt with Jack but he tells her to go help Sayid:
Kate: “Don’t you trust Sayid?”
Jack: “I don’t trust Locke.”
Kate: “And what’s preventing him from doing to me what he did to Naomi?”
Jack: “Sawyer won’t let him.”
B U R N ! !

Seems Daniel is trying out a little experiment. He calls the ship but Frank warns him:
Frank: “If Minkowski gets on there you hang up right away.”
A little dissension among the freighter-ites perhaps?
Ragina launches a package to the island that doesn’t arrive:
Daniel: “That is far more than weird.”

As Kate, Miles and Sayid arrive at O-town Miles starts to get the impression there are more people on this island than he realizes:
Miles: “What’s with the swing set, these people have daycare?”

The trio discovers Hurley tied and gagged. The Miles calls him tubby:
Hurley: “Oh awesome the ship sent us another Sawyer.”

Jack and Frank talk baseball, and Frank confirms the Red Sox did win the series:
Jack: “Can’t believe it’s been 100 days since I saw a game.”
The rocket from the ship then lands and has a clock inside. Seems that this clock and the clock on the island are 31 minutes apart.

Rocket Clock

Sayid finds Ben’s secret room with money and passports in it.

Dean Moriarty is one of the protagonists in Jack Kerouac's novel On the Road. Dean grew up in Colorado with a hobo/bum for a father

The trio then discovers that Hurley was faking and the Locke Squad shows up:
Sayid: “I’m not going to hurt you Hurley.”
Hurley: “Yeah I saw you snap that guy’s neck with that break dancing thing you do with your legs. I think I’ll hang back here.”

Sawyer questions Kate’s reasons for getting off the island:
Sawyer: “Why do you wanna go back Kate? I seem to recall you being shuttled off to jail before we landed here.”

Ben: “I’m thirsty”

Locke informs Sayid about Ben’s “man on the boat”:
Sayid: “Forgive me but the day I start trusting him is the day I would have sold my soul”
I guess we can look forward to that day in a Sayid flash-forward episode.

Desmond arrives at the helicopter:
Desmond: “So you look me right in the eye and tell me you’re never seen or heard of Penelope Widmore.” Long pause “Fine you don’t want to tell me the truth; I’ll find someone who will.”

Sayid returns and tells Jack that Kate decided to stay. Not exactly what happened I guess. When he explains to Frank he traded Miles:
Frank: “Lucky for you that guys nothing but a pain in my ass.”
Frank offers Charlotte a seat on the helicopter:
Charlotte: “Go back with all the fun I’m having here? No, I got work to do.”

So the three boys and Naomi’s body load up for the freighter:
Daniel: "Just be sure you follow the same exact bearing that we came in on ok? No matter what and by that I mean no matter what just stay on it.”
I recall our pal Michael getting similar directions.

Now to Sayid “the hitman” Jarrah… newest member of the Oceanic 6.

We first run into Sayid golfing in Europe where he meets an Italian man. It sounded like “Mr. Adeline” but was hard to understand over Sayid’s accent. Once he realizes Sayid is one of the O6 he gets really nervous. And for good cause, as Sayid kills him. The sprinklers turning on were a nice added touch.

Sayid then makes his way to Berlin where he meets Elsa, who is working on some Sudokus.

Sayid is looking to kill her boss. After meeting her he phones someone:
Sayid: “I’ve made contact” then throws the phone away.

In a hint that Elsa may not be as dumb as she seems she decides to leave her pager home. Sayid insists on taking it with him.
Elsa: “Do you have a boss?”
Sayid: “Everyone has a boss Elsa.”

Sometime later Elsa tells Sayid she is falling in love with him. At that her pager goes off. He feels bad for Elsa so tries to warn her of his intentions.
Sayid: “His name is on a list. The man you are working for is not an economist.”

At that Elsa shoots Sayid. She calls presumably her boss on the phone and makes some interesting quotes:
Elsa: “You were supposed to call at 10:30… why should I keep him alive… he had no idea…I’ll bring him to you.”
BANG BANG… Sayid shoots Elsa. As he gets closer to her we notice she is wearing a similar braclet to Naomi.

Sayid is off to get repaired and we discover Ben is his boss:
THE FINAL SCENE
Ben: “Is she dead?”
Sayid: “Yes.”
Ben: “Why didn’t she kill you?”
Sayid: “She was trying to get information from me.”
Ben: “What sort of information?”
Sayid: “She wanted to know who I worked for. She wanted to know about you.”
Ben: “Of course she did. Why are you crying, because it hurts or because you were stupid enough to care for her? These people don’t deserve our sympathies. Need I remind you what they did the last time you thought with your heart instead of your gun?” (Nadia perhaps?)
Sayid: “You used that to recruit me into killing for you.”
Ben: “You wanna protect your friends or not Sayid? I have another name for you.”
Sayid: “But they know I’m after them now.”
Ben: “Goooooood”
