Season 4 Episode 8

Season 4 Episode 8
Meet Kevin Johnson
Michael flashback

The show starts with Locke having a meeting in O-Town. He brings Miles with him. Sawyer thinks they should just turn Ben over but Locke says they cannot:
Ben: “Because once they have me their orders are to kill everyone else on the island.”
Miles doesn’t deny anything. Ben then officially confirms Michael is the spy on the boat. Sawyer asks Locke why he didn’t tell everyone about the 3.2 million Miles asked Ben for:
Locke: “I haven’t seen a bank on the island I didn’t think it worth mentioning.”
Miles: [laughing] “Linus will find a way to get it. He wants to survive, and considering a week ago you had a gun to his head and tonight he’s eating pound cake I’d say he’s a guy who gets what he wants.”

Ben convinces Alex, Danielle and Karl to get away from O-Town:
Alex: “These people, you say they are dangerous… more dangerous than you?”
Ben: “Yes… but your mother will protect you.”

On the freighter Sayid and Desmond awake to the Captain beating the crap out of someone trying to leave the ship. They corner Michael for an explanation to how he got on the boat…

MICAHEL FLASHBACK
We find Michael in New York writing a suicide note addressed to Walt. He pins the note to his shirt and then runs his car into ship container on the docks. He then has a dream in the hospital that Libby is his nurse. She’s carrying blankets just like she was when he shot her.

There is a person laying in the bed beside Michael that looks a lot like Alvar Hanso who we’ve seen in the Dharma videos

After leaving the hospital Michael tries to visit Walt who is staying with his mother. Walt doesn’t want to see him. The mother confirms that this takes place after Michael and Walt have left the island and that they are using aliases:
Mrs. Dawson: “So until you can explain to me where you were for over 4 months, you gave up your rights.”
Leaving the house Walt watches Michael from the window.

Michael then goes and pawns the watch Jin gave him for a gun. He goes down an alley to shoot himself only to be stopped by Tom. This gives us an even more specific time frame as we know Tom was killed by Sawyer. Tom figures out why Walt is upset with Michael:
Tom: “You told him didn’t you? You couldn’t carry the guilt of what you did to those two women all by yourself so you shared with a 10 year old kid… I got some bad news for you amigo, you can’t kill yourself the island won’t let you. “

Michael tries to kill himself but the gun doesn’t go off. Now before we get too excited keep in mind the gun he is using he got from Tom. He goes to see Tom in his hotel room. There it is confirmed that Tom is actually gay. We got a hint of this before when Tom told Kate “don’t worry you’re not my type.”
Tom: “… I don’t make it to the mainland often so when I do I like to indulge myself.”
Michael: “So you people can just come and go?”
Tom: “Some of us.”
Tom then adds a whole new twist to the fake wreck site of Oceanic 815. He claims it was all done by Charles Widmore and has invoices for a plane, pictures of empty grave sites, and shipping logs to back up his story. .
Tom: “…because he doesn’t want anyone else finding where the real plane ended up except for him.”
Tom then recruits Michael to become part of the freighter folks:
Tom: “Meet Kevin Johnson.”
He tells Michael this is the way to redeem himself.
Tom: “You’re not going on that boat so you can swab decks Michael, you are going so you can kill everyone onboard.”

Next we see Michael in Fiji boarding the boat with Naomi, Minkowski and Miles:
Miles: “your name isn’t Kevin… don’t worry 80% of the people on this boat are lying about something…”

On the ship he over hears a conversation between Naomi and Frank:
Frank: “No offense by I was flying these things when you were still in grade school, if anyone’s going to go first it should be me”
Naomi: “Yeah, I need you here to transport the science team Frank.”
Frank: “What the hell are you going to be doing?”
Naomi: “That’s need to know and you don’t.”
Frank then introduces himself to Michael:
Frank: “… you ever hear about Oceanic flight 815…what if I told you the plane they found in that trench wasn’t Oceanic 815?... you know those nuts that think the moon landing was faked? Well this is like that only real. That’s why I signed up for this trip because the owner of this boat believes me, Charles Widmore. He believes the 815 is still out there somewhere. I mean can you imagine what would happen if we found some of those people alive?”

Michael finds Keamy and the boys doing some shooting off the boat. They chuckle at the idea that this is a rescue mission. This entices him to open the crate that Ben sent him on the boat. He assumes it’s a bomb and sets it to explode attached to the fuel line. Before he sets it a vision of Libby appears again telling him not to do it. He sets it anyway only to have a flag pop up saying “NOT YET”. So basically Michael is the Willie Coyote of Lost.

Minkowski tells Michael he has a call from Walt. This turns out to be Ben calling from his secret room in his house:
Ben: “… there are people on your boat who are innocent. They have no idea that the man they work for is a monster… when I’m at war I’ll do what I need to win but I will not kill innocent people… I want you to compile a list of names, every person on your boat. When I call again you’ll give me that list then you’ll disable the radio room you are sitting in. When the crew is disoriented by their lack of communication you’ll take out the engines too, that way the boat can never get to this island and your friends will be safe."
Michael agrees to this plan:
Ben: “Then consider yourself on of the good guys.”

Back in real time (2004) Sayid is very upset that Michael is working for Ben. Sayid then snitches him out to the captain.

THE FINAL SCENE
While walking through the woods Danielle, Karl and Alex come under attack. Both Karl and Danielle are shot. I can confirm that Karl is dead, but I don’t think Danielle is gone just yet.
Alex: “WAIT WAIT DON’T… I’M BEN’S DAUGHTER… I’M HIS DAUGHTER!”

Now we have a five week break, next episode:
Season 4 Episode 9
April 24th
The Shape of Things to Come
Not confirmed but rumored to be a Ben flash-forward including his recruitment of Sayid.
PREVIEW
This preview also confirms the Oceanic 6 to be Kate, Jake, Hurley, Sayid, Aaron and Sun.
The producers did a podcast following this episode, here is the important info that came from that:
Desmond/Minkowski "side effects" may indeed be the "Sickness" that Rouseau refers to.
The Swan Hatch implosion will probably not be revisited. However, we have not seen the last of the "purple sky" this season.
If you believe what the psychic told Claire then Aaron is in danger if he is being 'Raised by Another'.
See you in 5 weeks

Season 4 Episode 7

Before getting into this weeks episode I had a chance to listen to the producers do a Podcast last week and they answered some questions:
Why did Dharma build the Tempest station?
The Tempest station is important, it’s was even on Kelvin’s map. Two possible reasons are (a) perhaps all Dharma missions weren’t peaceful ones and (b) the Dharma Initiative was aware of the “hostiles” on the island and were trying to protect themselves.
Is Charles Widmore really the man in charge of the freighter?
Yes he is, but Ben is lying when he says he doesn’t know why Widmore is looking for the island. We’ll know before the season ends Widmore’s reasons.
Will we see Harper again?
Yes she is alive and still on the island.
Who is Ben’s man on the boat?
You’ll find out during the Sun/Jin episode.
Are the video game, other online Dharma videos and Lost developed media true to the show (in other words accurate)?
Yes, all of these things are written by our writers. The orchid video for instance will actually become part of the show. [CLICK HERE TO SEE IT] The book Bad Twin is also true. All that being said all you NEED to watch is the show.
Will we see more Christian Sheppard, was he in Jacob’s cabin and is he dead?
We will see more Christian, and you did see him in Jacob’s cabin but that doesn’t mean he’s alive.
Will we see the smoke monster again?
Yes this season.
With Locke struggling with his faith right now, will his ideas be proven correct?
By the end of the season Locke will have better moments.
Is the video game ending all a dream?
No it is not. Although Lost characters can have “little” dreams none of the characters will just wake up some episode to find out everything they’ve experienced was a dream.

As for last week's missing pieces nothing really to report. It did however confirm that the person Harper says Juliet looks just like is Annie.

Season 4 Episode 7
Ji Yeon
Jin flashback
Sun flash-forward

JIN FLASHBACK
We find Jin on a search for a panda. We are being led to believe that this is a flash-forward, but there are some clues along the way that it is not. First we see Jin talking on an older model telephone. He flags down a taxi and then drops his phone, again for us to see it’s old. It gets run over by a motorbike. The cab rides away with his Panda and Jin screams as it pulls away that he will kill the person and rip their head off. The “new” Jin would never act this way. He goes back to the store and pays a lot of money for another panda. The store owner suggests a dragon, since it’s the year of the dragon. The year of the dragon was the year 2000. Sun is about to give birth in the year 2005, the year of the Rooster.

Jin arrives with the Panda:
Jin:I represent Paik Automotive [so he’s working for Sun’s dad] … Mr. Ambassador this panda is a symbol of Mr. Paik’s eagerness to do business in the great country of China.”

Nurse: “Leaving so soon?”
Jin: ”It wasn’t my baby.”
Nurse: “Well maybe some day.”
Jin: “Don’t rush me I’ve only been married for two months.”
Thus confirming the flashback.

ON THE ISLAND
Jin tells Sun she is having a girl, and wants to name her Ji Yeon.

After talking to Kate about Charlotte knocking her out and the continuation of Juliet’s lies Sun gets freaked out and assumes rescue is not coming. She asks Faraday if his people are going to rescue them:
Faraday: “It’s not really my call Sun.”

She tells Jin to gather supplies for a trip to Locke’s camp. While trying to get vitamins Juliet catches her. She tells Juliet she doesn’t trust her and she’s going to Locke’s camp anyway.

Kate draws the couple a map and Juliet makes a final attempt to stop them. When she cannot convince Jin she tells him about Sun’s affair. Jin gets pissed and goes fishing with Bernard. Bernard tells Jin about Rose having cancer. He is confused why Rose wouldn’t want to go to Locke’s camp:
Jin: “Then why you stay with Jack?”
Bernard: “Cause it was the right thing to do. Locke is a murderer.” [There are a few of those on the island, and although Jin beat up a lot of people we’ve never seen proof he killed any of them] … you make bad choices, bad things happen to you…we must be the good guys huh?”
That line has been used a few times in the series.

Juliet convinces Sun staying on the beach is the better idea. Jin forgives Sun for what she did, knowing it was because of the man he was. She confirms that the baby is his:
Jin: “I’ll do whatever it takes to protect you and the baby… I promise.”

ON THE FREIGHTER
We get our first glimpse of Regina. If you think you recognize her you likely do. She is Zoe Bell a famous Hollywood stunt double, most famous for being Uma Thurman’s stunt double in the Kill Bill movies, as well as playing herself in the movie Death Proof. We get our first indication that she is ill when Frank notices the book she is reading is upside down.

Frank brings Sayid and Desmond some lima beans:
Frank: “Sorry we had a little problem in the kitchen”
Sayid: “I still want to talk to the captain.”
Frank: “No you don’t.”

A note gets passed in through the door warning Desmond and Sayid not to trust the captain. Sayid and Desmond hear someone banging the pipes on the ship over and over again. The captain sends the Doctor to get Sayid and Desmond. When they arrive on deck the notice the chopper is gone:
Dr. Ray: “Lapidus is running an errand…”
Sayid: “Did he go to the island?”
Dr. Ray: “Do you know anywhere else he could land?”
And with that Regina jumps overboard. For a split second we get our first glimpse of Michael here:

Sayid and Desmond meet Captain Gault. His name is taken from the fictional Captain Gault created by writer William Hope Hodgson. You can read all about him HERE. Worth a read to see if this captain’s characteristics will match the others.
Sayid: “Let’s just start with why a woman just jumped over the side of your ship and you did nothing to stop it.”
Gault: “I didn’t jump in or order my crew to jump in because I didn’t wanna lose any more people… some of my crew have been dealing with what might best be described as a heightened case of cabin fever. I think it’s got something to do with the close proximity of the island. “
Sounds a lot like the sickness Danielle talked about and that Kelvin and Desmond were taking injections to avoid.
Sayid: “Why don’t you turn around then?”
Gault: “I’ve tried but we have a saboteur onboard and he’s done one hell of a job on my engines. I’ve got my crew working around the clock to repair them… then we move to safer waters, those are my orders.”
Sayid: “And I don’t suppose you’ll tell us who gave you those orders?”
Gault: “Sure I will, Charles Widmore.”
Desmond: “This is Charles Widmore’s boat?”
Gault: “That’s right you know him… do either of you know what this?”
Sayid: “It’s a flight data recorder, otherwise known as a black box.”
Gault: “That’s exactly what it is. Now here’s the funny thing. This black box comes from Oceanic flight 815. A salvage vessel recovered it from the bottom of the ocean. It took a considerable amount of Mr. Widmore’s resources to procure it. It was found with the wreckage of the plane along with all 324 dead passengers. That’s not the complete story as you are well aware Mr. Jarrah given the fact that you’re standing here … breathing. The wreckage was obviously staged. Now can you imagine what kind of resources and man power go into pulling off a feat of that magnitude? Faking the recover of a plane crash, putting 324 families through a grieving process based on a lie. But what’s even more disturbing, where exactly does one come across 324 dead bodies? And that Mr. Jarrah, Mr. Hume, is just one of the many reasons we want Benjamin Linus.”

Remember when I said the following?
Season 4 Episode 2
So someone went to a lot of work to stage the wreckage of Oceanic Flight 815. Now Mr. Ben Linus is very serious about keeping everyone on the island and everyone else away. It sure would make sense for him to set this up.

The Doctor leads them to their new living quarters:
Dr. Ray: “So what did you think of the captain”
Sayid: “He was surprisingly fourth coming.”
Dr. Ray: “He tells it like it is; just don’t piss him off… I think you’ll like your room it’s on a quiet part of the ship.”
Desmond: “This ship isn’t moving.”
Dr. Ray: “If you say so.”
There is a huge blood stain on the wall. Dr. Ray calls over Kevin Johnson to mop up the mess.

WEEEELLL WELLLL WELLLL where are the doubters now???
Remember when I said this?
Season 4 Episode 2
It’d be cool if it was Michael (we do know he’s coming back this season).

And if you are wondering why Desmond isn’t shocked to see Michael, it’s because Michael and Desmond have never met. When the survivors first met Desmond, Michael was on the raft with Sawyer, Walt and Jin. Before Michael returned, Desmond left on his boat trying to get away from the island.

SUN FLASH-FORWARD
We find Sun in Korea (hence the Korean writing on her toothpaste etc.) As she’s shutting off her TV we see she is watching the show “Exposé” staring other crash survivor Nikki.

She then starts to go into labour. As the nurse wheels her into the hospital she confirms to a coworker that Sun is indeed one of the Oceanic 6.
Remember when I said this?
Season 4 Episode 4
And I still got my money on Sun, she can’t have that baby on the island.

She tries to stop the nurse from removing her wedding ring. This would be the same ring Sun almost lost when she buried the bottle containing the letters the survivors wrote to be taken on the raft. This bottle washed up on shore and Sun buried it not being able to handle the fact the Jin may have drowned on the raft (which he didn’t of course).
Doctor: “Is there anyone we should contact?”
Sun: “Just get Jin… my husband…Jin… just get Jin.”
Again, more information in attempt to throw us off track. Sun explains this later.

Sun tries to hold off until Jin arrives for the birth but before too long out comes the baby girl.

Hurley arrives to visit Sun.
Hurley: “She looks just like Jin”
In case you doubted it was Jin’s baby.

THE FINAL SCENE
Jin’s grave (or memorial) sight… where it says he died the day of the Oceanic 815 crash, September 22nd, 2004.

Sun: “Jin you were right. It’s a girl. The delivery was hard on me; the doctor said I was calling out for you. I wish you could’ve been there. Jin she’s beautiful. Ji Yeon, I named her just like you wanted. I miss you so much. I miss you so much.”

So since the producers have said after this Episode we’ll know who the Oceanic 6 are and we also know Jin died on the island… we can assume the following:
Oceanic 6
Jack
Kate
Hurley
Sayid
Aaron (he WAS on the flight technically)
Sun

Season 4 Episode 6

Ok let’s start with a little news first. It looks like Lost will be taking a 4 week break after episode 8 thanks to the writers strike. Episode 8 airs Thursday, March 20th and Episode 9 will not air until Thursday, April 24th. There will be no breaks between Episode 9 and the Season Finale Episode 13. These last 5 episodes are still in production so let’s hope they get done.

Also, I’ve spent the last couple days playing the Lost video game Via Domus. The story part of the game is pretty neat; however the game play is awful and frustrating. The story plays out like this, you are a survivor of 815 (not a character we’ve met on the TV show) and from the crash you’ve developed amnesia. Each chapter of the game plays out like an episode (even starting with “…previously on Lost” each time). During the episodes you have normal Lost flashbacks, but from your flashbacks you learn about your past. To summarize your name is Elliot Maslow, a paparazzo photographer who caused the death of his girlfriend Lisa Gellhorn to get a great story. Your flashbacks play you out as quite the heal. On the island you see visions of Lisa (similar to Jack seeing his father). In the final episode you make a deal with Ben to bring him Jack in return for a boat off the island. As you are about to turn him over you have your final flashback and the guilt over Lisa’s deaths make you save Jack. Juliet then helps you get to the beach where there is a boat waiting and gives you the bearing of 325 to follow. You hop on the boat and head out when all of the sudden you look up to see flight 815 crashing above you. You wake up on the beach after the crash to see Lisa… now alive, a survivor from the flight herself ???? Time travel again? Really cool ending; watch by clicking HERE.

As for the missing pieces episode, there wasn’t anything in the episode we hadn’t discussed. If you did see it however you would have noticed some confirmation on a lot of the things I pointed out like the Hanso connection to the Black Rock, as well as the comparison of the light from Faraday’s machine to the light in the sky after Desmond blew up the Swan hatch.

Season 4 Episode 6
The Other Woman – Juliet Flashback

This Episode can be divided into 3

1. JULIET FLASHBACK
Juliet’s first week on the island she meets the local therapist, Harper Stanhope. On Harper's wall in her office you can see a “Certificate of Recognition” from the Hanso Foundation.

During her first meeting with Goodwin, Juliet discovers he is working with chemicals and that he is married to Harper. They discuss the death of Henrietta, the first woman Juliet loses in childbirth on the island. She would lose 8 more including a woman named Sabine.
Juliet: “It’s like the immune system turns on the fetus.”

Juliet meets with Harper again:
Harper: “So Juliet, what do you think of Ben?”
Juliet: “He’s great… very smart and intense; challenging. He’s been really good to me.”
Harper: “Of course he has, you look just like her.”
My guess is that the “her” in question is Ben’s childhood girlfriend Annie. Annie was the little girl who made wooden dolls of Ben and herself. If you own last season on DVD, watch this flashback episode (Season 3 Episode 20, The Man Behind the Curtain) and turn on the commentary, where the show creators describe Annie as being of “seismic” importance to Lost.

Harper reveals that she followed Juliet and Goodwin and watched them:
Harper: “Now if you continue to have a relationship with Goodwin there will be consequences. I don’t want him to get hurt.”
Juliet: “I would never hurt him.”
Harper: “I’m not talking about you I’m talking about Ben.”

During a date on the beach Goodwin pours some wine he stole off the sub:
Goodwin: “A little less than a kilometre from here he has me working with chemicals that could kill every man, woman and child on this island if I flip the wrong switch. Trust me, Ben has enough on his plate. The last thing he cares about is you and me… what’s Ben gonna do?”

While Goodwin is on assignment with the Tailies, Ben invites Juliet over for dinner. If you didn’t crack up at Ben being all giddy while cooking dinner this show isn’t for you.
Ben: “I wanna thank you for how wonderful you’ve been with Zach and Emma.”
Juliet: “They are really sweet kids. Ben they’ve been asking about their mother in Los Angeles. I’m not really sure what to say.”
Ben: “They’ll stop asking in time.”
Juliet: “They are children, do they really belong here?”
Ben: “They are on the list Juliet, who are we to question who’s on the list and who’s not?”
If you don’t remember Zach and Emma are the two little kids the Others kidnapped from the tail section survivors.

In one of the best “Ben” scenes ever, he takes Juliet to Goodwin’s dead body:
Juliet: “You knew this would happen… why?”
Ben: “WHY? You are asking me why? After everything I did to get you here, after everything I’ve done to keep you here, how can you possibly not understand… that you’re MINE?”

2. THE TEMPEST
Faraday and Charlotte vanish into the jungle. Juliet, Jack, Sun and Jin follow after them. Juliet hears some whispers then runs into Harper:
Harper: “I came to deliver a message from Ben. The two people you are looking for … they’re headed to the Tempest. And if they figure out how to deploy that gas everyone on this island is going to die.”
Juliet: “Why don’t you stop them?”
Harper: “Cause Ben wants you to.”
Juliet: “How can Ben possibly know where they are when he’s a prisoner?”
Harper: “Ben is exactly where he wants to be.”
Miles used this line as well. Jack shows up, the whispers come back and Harper vanishes. Of course the question is, is she really taking orders from Ben? Keep in mind Ben is being held in his own basement, there is likely a way into it.

Jack starts asking about the Tempest:
Juliet: “It’s safer for you if I don’t talk about it… it’s an electrical station that powers the island.”

Kate catches up to Faraday and Charlotte and gets knocked out for her troubles.
Jack and Juliet find her and Juliet ditches the two of them.
Kate lets Jack know that the people on the freighter know she is a fugitive.

Juliet reaches the Tempest and we see its Dharma logo for the first time.

She asks Faraday to stop messing with the computer:
Faraday: “I’m just trying to make it safe.”

She then gets tackled by Charlotte and a cat fight ensues. Juliet gets the upper hand and Charlotte questions if she can trust Ben with the gas:
Charlotte: “We know he’s used it before.”
Faraday then saves the day:
Faraday: “… that… that was a close one.”

Jack and Kate arrive and Juliet talks to Jack:
Juliet: “These people have come here to wage war against Ben and Ben’s gonna win. And when he does you don’t wanna be anywhere near me.”
Then they kiss. People start telling me “they finally kissed”. Oh how quickly we forget, that was actually kiss #2:
3. MR LINUS
Claire asks John to talk to Miles but he shuts her down pretty quick. The purpose of this was just to show how Ben manipulates Locke by saying people will question everything he does.

Locke brings Ben supper:
Ben: “Rabbit today?”
Locke: “We’re running out of chickens.”
Ben: “This didn’t have a number on it did it?”
HAHAHA

Locke: “I assume you have a plan?”
Ben: “I always have a plan.”
Locke: “Does it involve you raising 3.2 million dollars?... wheew that’s a lot of money. Wait maybe this will get you started.”
Where did Locke get the money to hand to Ben? I believe it is the $20 bill from Season 2 that the real Henry Gale wrote the note to his wife/girlfriend Jennifer on.

Ben tells Locke they have a common enemy. Not the people on the boat but the one they work for. They make a deal, Ben gives some answers Locke gives him some freedom. Locke is concerned he’ll just take off:
Ben: “If my people still wanted me John they would have stormed this camp long ago.”
Ben then pulls out a video of Charles Widmore:
Ben: “This is the man that’s been trying to find the island.”
Locke: “How does Widmore know about the island?”
Ben: “I don’t know, but he does.”
Locke: “What does he want?”
Ben: “John 3 months ago in Gainsville Florida the Virgin Mary seemed to appear on a patch of mold on the side of an old housing complex. When the word got out over 5000 people came to see her face for themselves. You survived an airline crash on this island. One minute you’re in a wheelchair the next minute you’re doing jumping jacks. If 5000 people came out to see a piece of mold how many people do you think would come here to see you?”
The video finishes with Widmore beating someone up and then seems to spot the person who is video taping.

Ben gives John his file on Widmore.
Locke: “There’s one more thing I need to know. Your man on the boat, I want you to tell me who it is.”
Ben: “Alright, but you might wanna sit down.”
Can you believe there are people still doubting my Michael theory?

THE FINAL SCENE
Ever hear the old saying “close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades”?
Well last week Miles got the grenade, this week Hurley and Sawyer got the horseshoes. And have you ever noticed Hurley always wins (horseshoes, ping pong, etc)? The two of them spot Ben walking free:
Ben: “See you guys at dinner.”

Season 4 Episode 5

Just a couple quick notes from the “Missing Pieces” Episode:
“This is the survivors’ 93rd day on the island.”
“Kate’s arraignment is docket #42231615

Season 4 Episode 5
The Constant – Desmond centric

On the way to the freighter the helicopter carrying Desmond, Sayid and Frank enters a thunder storm. Desmond’s subconscious begins bouncing between the present date (December 24th, 2004) and 1996. His mind is clearly anchored in 96 as he has no recollection of what is happening in 2004. We know from previous episodes Desmond’s current situation in 1996. He has already met Penny and was wanting to ask her to marry him. When seeking Penny’s father’s blessing, Mr. Widmore makes it clear he doesn’t think Desmond is good enough. Shortly after this, Penny and Desmond have their picture taken; the picture he carries with him. Penny had to pay for the picture as Desmond was unemployed. When this occurred he realized Penny’s dad may be right and left Penny and joined the Royal Scot Guard, where we find him now. We know this is early on in his tenure there as he is still going through training. Desmond eventually reaches the rank of Lance-Corporal. A situation happened sometime after that which has only been described as Desmond not being able to “follow orders”. Because of this Desmond was sent to Military prison.

On the beach Juliet and Jack are concerned about the time it’s taken for the helicopter to land on the boat:
Daniel: “Your perception of how long your friends have been gone, it’s not necessarily how long they’ve been gone."
Daniel goes on to say things will be fine as long as Frank stays on the bearings he gave him:
Jack: “And what if he didn’t?”
Daniel: “Then there might be side effects.”

The helicopter lands on the freighter, The Kahana

There we first meet two of the crew, Keamy and Omar. Keamy is not impressed with Frank’s decision to bring survivors to the freighter:
Keamy: “So you brought them here, what the hell were you thinking?”
They take Desmond to sickbay.

Desmond is then bounced back to 96 where he calls Penny. Before getting into the phone booth he runs into this guy.

Can’t say I recognize him but clearly he’s being shown for a reason.

Before Desmond can pick up his money he’s back in 2004 and off to sickbay. There we get our first face to face glimpse with Minkowski, who is suffering the same symptoms as Desmond.

Sayid starts to piece some odd things together with Frank:
Sayid: “Then perhaps you’ll share how we took off at dusk and landed in the middle of the day.”
Frank: “Listen, I don’t know what’s happening to your buddy alright? But you gotta trust me when I tell you this… I am trying to help you.”
Sayid calls Jack to let him know they made it and that Desmond has been acting crazy:
Daniel: “… your friend Desmond, has he recently been exposed to high levels of radiation or electromagnetism?”
Desmond spent three years in the Swan hatch, which had a strange magnetic field behind the large concrete wall.
Daniel: “We don’t know why but some people coming from or going to the island can get a little bit confused.”
The real significance of this comment is easily overlooked. The major point here is Daniel has just confirmed that he knows several people who made trips to and/or from the island.

Minkowski: “See Ray, I’m not crazy. It’s happening to him too Ray. And it’s going to happen to you; it’s going to happen to all of us. Everyone, once we start heading to that island again.”
The Doctor (Ray) tries to examine Desmond:
Ray: “I don’t want to stick you with anything. I just want to check your eyes.”
Eyes have been a reoccurring theme in Lost, including numerous episodes starting with a close up of a characters eye as well as Locke discussing the Eye of the Island.

1996 Desmond is back to gathering up his money and turns to see the man he bumped into walking away. In other words although the time he just spent in 2004 may have seemed long, it was only seconds that have past in 1996. He calls Penny but she isn’t very thrilled about hearing from him. She has even moved.

2004 Daniel is on the phone and talking to Desmond. He sends Desmond to meet him in 1996 at Oxford University where Daniel is a professor. In a previous flashback we met a friend of Desmond named Donovan who was also a physics professor in England. Donovan was advising a student named Partridge. Donovan was concerned as her research was inherent and unpredictable.
Daniel explains to Jack that this has happened several times before.

1996 Desmond meets Daniel at Oxford. Daniel asks Desmond if the “2004 Daniel” remembers the meeting they are having:
Desmond: “Actually …um… no… maybe you just forgot.”
Daniel: “Yeah right how would that happen?”
We know Daniel had a caregiver in 2004 before he left for the island. We also watched him and Charlotte working on his memory skills, which weren’t so great.
Daniel puts on his radiation smock but tells Desmond he doesn’t need one:
Daniel: “It’s for prolonged exposure. I do this 20 times a day.”
Desmond: “So what do you put on your head?”
Interesting…
Daniel then using the info Desmond provided sends his mouse’s subconscious through time. The light from Daniel's machine looked a lot like the light that was in the sky after Desmond blew up the Swan hatch.

2004
Keamy: “You let Faraday talk to him?”
Frank: “He said he could help.”
Ray: “Faraday can’t even help himself.”
Omar takes Frank to the Captain, so apparently we’ve yet to meet the person in charge.
Minkowski: “You’re Desmond?”
Desmond: “Do I know you?”
Minkowski: “I’m George Minkowski… before they strapped me down here all the calls to and from this boat came through me in the radio room. And every so often I’d get this flashing light on my console; an incoming call. We were under strict orders never to answer it. Those calls came from your girlfriend, Penelope Widmore.”
So should we assume Minkowski answered one of those calls since he knows who it was and that she knew Desmond? This would explain how Naomi knew Desmond but where did she get the picture?

1996
Desmond was in 2004 for almost 75 minutes.
Daniel: “Each time your consciousness jumps it gets harder and harder to jump back.”
Daniel’s mouse dies and he tells Desmond he needs an anchor, a constant to survive and stop the jumping.

2004
Minkowski: “Two days ago someone sabotaged all the equipment. We lost all communication with the mainland.”
Sayid: “And how do we get out of here?”
Minkowski: “Through the door. Looks like you guys have a friend on this boat.”
For those of you still doubting me that Michael is on this boat… it won’t be long now.

1996

Auctioneer: “The Black Rock set sail from Portsmouth, England March 22, 1845… when she was tragically lost at sea. The only known artifact of this journey is the journal of the ships first mate which was discovered among the artifacts of pirates … 7 years later.”
We of course know the Black Rock is sitting on the island. Tovard Hanso was the owner of the Black Rock ledger. Prior to the sale, only members of Hanso's family were privy to the contents of the ledger. Charles Widmore purchased the journal for £380,000. Tovard is presumably related to Magnus Hanso, the presumed owner of the Black Rock, and Alvar Hanso, CEO of the Hanso Group and founder of the Hanso Foundation. You may recall Mr. Hanso being mentioned in the orientation videos.
Mr. Widmore gives Desmond Penny’s address confident she’ll tell him to split. He calls Desmond a coward as he’s done on numerous occasions.

2004 Minkowski leads Sayid and Desmond to the communications room. Desmond inquires as to how he became sick:
Minkowski: “… me and Brandon, one of the crew members, we took out the ships tender. We just wanted to see the island. But Brandon started acting crazy, so we had to turn around.”
Desmond: “Where is he?”
Minkowski: “In a body bag.”
And then Minkowski dies.

1996 Desmond tracks down Penny
He convinces her to give him her new number. He promises not to call until December 24th, 2004.

2004 Desmond calls Penny:
Penny: “I’ve been looking for you for the past 3 years. I know about the island, I’ve been researching…” call breaks up momentarily “… then when I spoke to your friend Charlie that’s when I knew you were still alive, that’s when I knew I wasn’t crazy.”
Desmond: “I love you Penny… I’ve always loved you, I’m so sorry...I love you. I don’t know where I am but…”
Penny: “I’ll find you Des…”
Desmond: “I promise…”
Penny: “No matter what…”
Desmond: “I’ll come back to ya…”
Penny: “I won’t give up…”
Desmond: “I promise…”
Penny: “I promise…”
Penny & Desmond: “I love you.”
And with that Desmond is back to normal.

The Final Scene
Daniel Faraday reads in his journal:
“IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG DESMOND HUME WILL BE MY CONSTANT”

For a first time in a long time the numbers showed up a lot this week:
Sergeant: “Right; all of ya in the yard 4 minutes…”
Daniel’s info he gives Desmond is 2.342
The journal being auctioned is lot #2342
Penny’s address is 423
Desmond: “I won’t call for 8 years.”
